Country Roads, Quiet Rooms, and Inner Weight: Two Plays in Conversation

As TheaterScene.net approaches its 24th anniversary, I’ve been reflecting not only on the shows we cover but also on how they speak to one another across the season. Sometimes two productions, opening within days of each other, unexpectedly illuminate common ground. This past week, seeing "let’s talk about anything else" (reviewed by Victor Gluck) and "The Porch on Windy Hill" (reviewed by Joseph Pisano), I couldn’t help but notice how these seemingly different works echo each other in intriguing ways. There's a palpably tragic tension between Edgar and Mira, which the play's quartet of writers--Sherry Stregack Lutken, Lisa Helmi Johanson, Morgan Morse, and David M. Lutken--naturally let develop, trusting the actors (and, in Lutken's case, himself) to convey it in fraught silences. But "The Porch on Windy Hill" is no joyless drama; it also includes lots of glorious, soul-stirring sound, which buffers the characters' pain through a heady musical mélange that links everyone on the stage, even when they seem worlds apart. A classical violinist, Mira's talent originated from the long-ago example of her grandfather's expert banjo and guitar pickin', while her beautiful singing voice, similar to Edgar's, is much more candid than her speaking one. No mellifluous slouch himself, Beckett joins Mira and Edgar in a series of stringed reveries that run the gamut from Haydn to bluegrass and, as music often does, take up the emotional slack when regular words don't come easily. Charmed Life: From Soul Singing to Opera Star

She gets to sing everything from the Patsy Kline classic “Crazy,” “Respect” (made famous by Aretha Franklin), and “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess to generous, beautifully acted scenes from Bizet’s Carmen, her favorite role and the highlight of the show. The setting, a comfortable, slightly formal room (by Jaime Terrazzino) also includes a convenient grand piano played by John DiPinto (who alternates with Allison Brewster Franzetti), clearly delighting in collaborating with this warm-hearted diva. Death of a Driver

The play is carefully plotted, and the tragic action that Snider builds runs its course in a logical, plausible fashion. But something about "Death of a Driver" never quite catches fire. The story has gravity but lacks the sense of pity and terror that tragedy is famously supposed to invoke. Maybe it’s partly due to the fact that the play is so brief, and that its short scenes sometimes take place years apart, creating a kind of herky-jerky quality. Maybe it’s because the world of the play is relatively narrow—with the lack of supporting characters preventing us from getting a full sense of the Kenyan culture and political landscape. [more]

Dogs of Rwanda

Dan Hodge commandingly plays the American narrator who has written a book about his youthful experiences in Rwanda during its 1994 civil war and genocide. Mr. Hodge created the role in the 2017 Philadelphia production of the play. The boyish yet mature, and personable Hodge perfectly portrays this young man traumatized by witnessing atrocities. His All-American presence, good looks and charisma energize the grim and familiar material. He enters through the theater and addresses the audience throughout with charm. [more]
