Adhering admirably to its cultural mission, Kairos Italy Theater is treating downtown audiences to a double-bill of smartly written Italian one-acts, each exploring the contentious topic of immigration in their own unique and achingly human ways. Minimally staged, but with talented actors, the beauty of the plays is largely in the playwrights’ words, which seemingly have lost nothing in translation. While proud of how she is portrayed in the press, as a woman who couldn’t be broken, McPhee delves beneath the surface to illustrate how Shanley really felt once she returned to an empty apartment at the end of the day -- with her beloved dog as her only real company. Like everyone else, she experiences confusion, loneliness, and pain and only can hope that her good choices and desire to help mankind outweigh the mistakes that she has made. [more]

Soaking WET 2016

There are relatively few venues, even in dance crazy NYC, where fledgling choreographers can work on their craft in a totally professional environment. Soaking WET at the West End Theater is one of them. Curator David Parker and producer Jeffrey Kazin run a tight, but open-minded, ship. The dances I saw, flawed as they were, had inklings of wit and inspiration. [more]
