Lingoland

The stage and floor of the York Theatre are awash with words set the mood and ease the audience’s way into Lingoland, a musical revue recognizing the multi-talents of Kenward Elmslie.

Kenward Elmslie, now age 75, is a wizard of words, who well deserves to have his talents honored, having written the libretti for operas, such as “Miss Julie,” and musicals such as “The Grass Harp” and many books of poetry. He also conveys great charm, wit and warmth, so you are rooting for this production the moment you meet him, as he plays an integral role in weaving the collage through the anecdotes, poetry and excerpts of his autobiography “Bare Bones” which he shares. “Bare Bones” is particularly touching as it introduces you to the artist Joe Brainard, whom Elmslie lost to AIDS in 1994 after a 31-year relationship. And it is Brainard’s work that beautifully, and in some cases pointedly, illustrates many of the musical numbers, poems, and memories.

James Morgan, the artistic director, does a laudable job with his amiable cast of performers in trying to organize and present a 50-year career characterized by great diversity. At a bit more than two hours, in this case, less would have been more, since much of the music showcasing Elmslie’s words is rather non-descript. However, thanks to the break out performances of Lauren Shealy, Jason Dula, and Steve Routman and several really clever, insightful, and often thought-provoking songs, many of which came from the “Grass Harp,” Lingoland is well worth your time and money.

“Love-Wise,” which was made famous by Nat King Cole, “Chain of Love,” “Original Parkway,” “Vaudeville for Jean Harlow,” “Marry with Me,” “One Night Stand,” “ Beauty Secrets,” and my personal favorite, “Girl Machine,” which captures the essence of a Busby Berkley musical, are all stand-out numbers.
