"Untitled Calamity Jane Play" by Kati Frazier is a memory play attempting to make sense of all the different versions of the iconic woman, Calamity Jane. As directed by Akia Squitieri, the play is well-told from the perspective of different versions of Martha Jane Cannary. It leaves the viewer with an idea of who this person is without establishing a clear identity. It also shows that it is not so important to know the truth of her life as much as to revel in the wonder of it. [more]

Mr. Hagins has crafted an involving and affective take of a perennial scenario that captures the nostalgic essence of wartime films and plays of the past.  There’s the spirit of "Casablanca" and echoes of "The Voice of The Turtle" and "John Loves Mary," combined with the novelty of the interracial angle that’s tenderly realized. A leggy dark blonde young woman with her hair pulled up, wearing a black skirt, a patterned short gray blouse and high heels walks through the audience and onto the bare black stage. She begins dancing and then is joined by two lovely young female dancers in psychedelic tunics and all three perform Valerie Mae Browne’s beautifully choreographed modern dance accompanied by mellow pulsating electronic music. It’s all something that would not be out of place on a program at The Joyce Theatre. [more]
