Louis Philip (“Bud”) Deffaa, 95, father of TheaterScene’s Editor-at-Large Chip Deffaa, died Dec 20, 2018

Active in local civic affairs, he twice led successful campaigns to preserve the Lower Doremus Park woods in Glen Rock. He served as president of the Rocky Glen Lake Association. He was an active member of the Glen Rock Community Church from 1957 until his passing.

Louis Philip (“Bud”) Deffaa of Glen Rock, New Jersey, has died of natural causes at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey. He was 95. The son of Arthur Edward Deffaa and Helen Skillman Deffaa, he was born and raised in Larchmont, New York. He had one brother, Richard Deffaa. He attended Lehigh University. He enlisted in the Navy and served in and around China during World War Two. After the war, he married Alberta Saby of Allentown, Pennsylvania; they were married for 68 years, until her passing in 2014. He founded and ran for several decades the Dala Packaging Company; and he co-founded MVS USA, which his daughter Deborah runs today. He long served as president of the New Jersey AAU (Amateur Athletics Union). Active in local civic affairs, he twice led successful campaigns to preserve the Lower Doremus Park woods in Glen Rock. He served as president of the Rocky Glen Lake Association. He was an active member of the Glen Rock Community Church from 1957 until his passing. He was a member of both the American Legion and the VFW, and often could be found at the head of the Glen Rock Independence Day parades.

He is survived by his children, Art, Deb, and Chip Deffaa; and by his grandchildren, Deborah, Alexandrah, Max, and Julia Deffaa.

There will be a viewing from 5:30-7:30 pm Friday, December 21st, at the Browning Forshay Funeral Home in Hawthorne, New Jersey. A service will be held at 6:30pm. He will be buried Saturday morning with his wife at the Garden of Peace Cemetery in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Glen Rock Community Church, 354 Rock Road, Glen Rock, NJ 07452.
