Following its acclaimed 2019 Off-Broadway production of The Glass Menagerie, the local theater company Ruth Stage’s follow up was to be the first Off-Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in July 2020. Both of these were sanctioned by the Tennessee Williams Estate which rarely approves small-scale New York City mountings of his major works.
However, the Covid-19 pandemic closed all theaters in New York State last year and continued to scuttle Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’s rescheduling. Now that the climate for the performing arts is improving, Ruth Stage has recently announced that Cat on a Hot Tin Roof will open in January 2022, at the Theater at Saint Clement’s.
“This is going to be a very costly production and we truly believe the show will happen as planned this January. We think we are going to be part of that first wave of shows that are going to be at full capacity” said Matt de Rogatis, Ruth Stage’s Creative Director and who will be playing Brick. Mr. de Rogatis has instigated a novel fundraiser for the production as the company has a New Jersey gaming license.
“On June 26, 2021, from Aamantran Indian Cuisine in Toms River, New Jersey, we will be holding our second 50/50 raffle event and the stakes are even higher! This time we will be selling only 2000 tickets and there will be five chances to win, including a $75,000 grand prize. It’s $100 to enter and half of the proceeds benefit Ruth Stage and our theatre endeavors. The other half goes to you! The winner need not be present at the drawing.”
In 2018, the non-profit Ruth Stage presented a rousing Off-Off-Broadway epic, The Wars of The Roses. This artful amalgamation of Henry VI and Richard III, was co-directed by Austin Pendleton and Peter Bloch, and featured de Rogatis’ grand performance as the deformed murderous monarch. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 2022, promises to be as equally as accomplished as Ruth Stage’s prior efforts.
