Brooklyn United Live’s Finale Piece

Heart-pounding rhythms, precision choreography, a thought-provoking storyline, and a megadose of energy and enthusiasm. That’s what audience members experience with Brooklyn United Live: The Evolution of a Dream at La MaMa Experimental Theater Club at 66 East 4th Street, New York.

Brooklyn United Music and Art Program’s mission is to provide inner city youth aged 5 to 21 with a positive marching band experience, while promoting students with academic support, character development, skills building and performance opportunities. The program offers after-school and Saturday programs, as well as summer camps for kids.

In “The Evolution of a Dream,” drummers and dancers ranging in age from 5 to 17 told the story of what happens to the dreams of victims of sense violence. The Brooklyn United drum line demonstrated their impressive percussion skills in combination with complex choreography. The dance troupe also showcased their wide range of talent, from modern dance routines to more classical ballet-inspired pieces. Visual backdrops supported the music and dance pieces, moving the story line along. Video clips also told the history of Brooklyn United. We were inspired by the passion, discipline, and confidence of the performers.
